| Known also as Stitch Counters and Linen Checkers, Linen Testers, as the name suggests, were first introduced to assist in the textile trade. Most have a magnification of x6 or x10 on a fixed focal length. When open, the cut out square on the base is marked along all four sides in Imperial or Metric scales. (It is still a surprise, or is it, that we sell ten times as many Imperial models than Metric)! This enables the number of threads and weave to be counted to the inch (or centimetre) and therefore to determine the quality and strength of the material. More recently they are used extensively in the print trade and photography, to test the quality of the paper and the pixels respectively. A Linen Tester is also the most useful type of Magnifier for looking at watermarks, stamp perforations etc. While there are some cheap plastic models available which are adequate, these Hilkinson, Japanese made, metal models are far superior and the hinge mechanism should not wear out, whereas the plastic ones are likely to break after a length of usage. A new introduction is the Lumagny model which, although it has a plastic mount and lens, benefits from being illuminated and having both Imperial and Metric scales. |
